Let’s be real, Mama—life can feel like a never-ending juggling act. Between the kids, household chores, and everything in between, finding time for your goals? Yeah, that often feels like mission impossible. And when we do find a sliver of time, it can be easy for those goals to fall by the wayside as we focus on everyone else.
Trust me, I’ve been there. But here’s the thing: your goals deserve attention too. You deserve to thrive—not just as a mom, but as the individual beneath that title. Whether you're dreaming of picking up a long-lost hobby, making a career shift, or diving into some personal growth, setting goals that actually stick is where it all starts.
Now, I’m not here to give you some expert roadmap—I’m just a mom like you, trying to make it work. These are the steps that have helped me set goals that last, and I hope they can help you too.
1. Get Crystal Clear on Your “Why”
Before even thinking about writing down a goal, ask yourself: Why does this matter to me? The clearer you are on your “why,” the easier it’ll be to stay motivated. What will this goal bring into your life? Maybe it’s peace, fulfillment, or a sense of accomplishment.
For me, that “why” moment came when I decided to take up gardening. I had always loved the idea of growing my own flowers and veggies, but I’d never made the time for it. With three kids and endless responsibilities, it felt like a luxury I couldn’t afford. But when I thought about the deeper why—how it could bring peace, a sense of accomplishment, and even a bit of self-care into my daily routine—it became more than just a hobby. Gardening became a form of meditation for me, a way to clear my mind while staying connected to nature. It made sense in a way that other meditative practices didn’t, and because I connected with it, I stayed consistent. Now, I have a flourishing little garden that not only nourishes my soul but also nourishes my family. That “why” is what gets me outside to the garden each day, rain or shine.

2. Break It Down into Bite-Sized Pieces
You know that overwhelming feeling when a goal seems too big to tackle? I’ve been there. The trick is to break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. When I started my garden, I didn’t plan to have it fully up and running in a week (and, spoiler alert, it didn’t happen that fast). I started with just a couple of plants in pots. Those small steps added up over time, and little by little, my garden grew—along with my confidence.
Instead of trying to tackle everything at once, divide your goal into smaller, manageable steps. Those small wins will add up over time and build momentum. It’s just like planting seeds in your garden. You don’t expect them to blossom overnight. You nurture them bit by bit, giving them what they need to grow. Your goals deserve the same kind of care and patience.
3. Schedule Time for Your Goals (Even if It’s Just 15 Minutes)
Here’s the truth: if it’s not on my calendar, it’s not happening. I’m sure a lot of you can relate. We schedule doctor’s appointments, school pickups, and a thousand other things for everyone else, so why not treat our goals the same way? I started blocking out 30 minutes a day for gardening. It’s non-negotiable now, and just like anything else in my life, it goes on the calendar.
It might seem like a small amount of time, but those 30 minutes have made a huge difference in keeping my goal alive. Whatever your goal is, make a little space for it in your day—even if it’s just 15 minutes. Trust me, it adds up.
4. Keep It Real—Set Goals That Fit Into Your Life
As moms, we tend to aim high. But it’s important to be realistic about what you can achieve within the time and resources you have. Don’t set yourself up for disappointment by aiming for goals that require more time than you can realistically give. Instead, tailor your goals to fit into the rhythm of your life.
If you’re already juggling work, kids, and a household, a goal like “launch a business in 30 days” might be too much. But setting a goal like “spend 30 minutes a day researching business ideas” is doable. By creating realistic, achievable goals, you’re more likely to stay committed.
5. Celebrate Every Win—Even the Small Ones
I used to think celebrating only happened when you crossed the finish line, but I’ve learned that every step forward deserves recognition. Maybe you planted your first herb or carved out time for a new hobby you’ve been meaning to try—whatever it is, celebrate it!
Success is found in those small victories, not just the final outcome. So, whether it’s a mental high-five or treating yourself to a little something, celebrate your progress along the way.
Mama, your goals matter. They deserve time, space, and energy in your life just as much as anyone else’s needs do. And the beauty of it all is that when you thrive, your family thrives too. It’s not selfish to pursue your passions—it’s essential.
